Battle of aces begun; Favourites live up to the hype !

Kelaniya, J’pura and Colombo, the pre-tournament favourites, were able to remain unbeaten on the second day of the inter university women’s tennis championship held at the Gymkhana Queens Club tennis courts, despite weather god heavily interfering for most of the morning session.

Though the first day was washed out due to persistent showers, Day 2 began on time with Peradeniya and J’pura squaring off. J’pura came out winners by easily dispatching Peradeniya 3 matches to 1. Immediately after the first match, rain brought play to a halt again. After 4 hours of rain, officials were able to resume.

Colombo, the reigning champions and number one seed in group A, came on top as they handled Sabaragamuwa with ease (Colombo 3 – Sabaragamuwa 1). The match between Moratuwa and Sabaragamuwa, which could potentially decide the second semifinalist from group A, was the closest affair among all events. The first 4 matches (three singles and one doubles) ended up at a stalemate as both teams won two apiece. The 5th and deciding doubles match between T.Nittiya/A.Arulpriya of Sabaragamuwa and M.G.K. Gunasekara/G.K.S.M. Amarasinghe became thriller as Sabaragamuwa edged Moratuwa 9 games to 7. The only remaining match in Group A plays (25th June) between Moratuwa and Colombo. Moratuwa plays for survival in the competition while Colombo tries to win the match and top group A.

Group B was less exciting as heavy favourites J’pura and Kelaniya were not in a mood for any upsets. They took care of things as both teams defeated Uwa Wellassa and Peradeniya easily. Japura vs Uwa wellassa saw a completely dominant effort from Japura ladies as they won the first three singles matches without conceding a 4th match. With two losses, Uwa Wellassa and Peradeniya were eliminated from the tournament but play their final group match on the 26th against each other. Meanwhile the match between J’pura and Kelaniya decides who comes on top from Group B.
