Against All Odds - Aruna Darshana's Spectacular Run in the 400m Heats

In the Men's 400m round 1, Sri Lanka's one-lap champion, Aruna Darshana, showcased his talent amidst a highly competitive field. Competing in Heat 6, he faced formidable opponents, including the world-ranked No. 4, and former Olympic gold medalist and three-time podium finisher Kirani James from Grenada, who boasts a season-best time of 44.38s.


Racing in lane 9, which is considered a challenging position, Aruna defied expectations. Despite the stiff competition, World No. 52 ranked Aruna clocked a remarkable time of 44.99s, finishing in 3rd position in heat 5 and achieving his personal best, advancing to the next round. He ranked 17th out of 44 players. Aruna improved his personal best by three-tenths of a second when it mattered the most. According to his world rankings, no one expected such a result. His perseverance and dedication have brought pride to Sri Lanka, and the nation eagerly anticipates his next round.


The heat was won by Kirani James with a time of 44.79s. Aruna's determination and effort are evident, and Sri Lanka remains hopeful as he aims to improve his personal best again and qualify for the finals in the upcoming semi final race.
