The Inter-Faculty Baseball Tournament 2019 organized by the Baseball Team of the University of Moratuwa was held on 31st of June and 1st of July 2019. Three teams from the Faculty of Engineering (EFac), Faculty of Architecture (Archi) and Faculty of NDT clashed against each other in a fierce battle for victory.
The main target of the tournament was to prepare the players for the upcoming Sri Lanka University Games. Nadun Karunarathne, captain of the Baseball Team of the University of Moratuwa, stated that the opportunity to play against each other as teams was a boost-up for the Baseball Team as well as an opportunity for new players to experience the spirit of the game.
In the preliminary round of the tournament, the scores of the matches of EFac vs NDT, NDT vs Archi and EFac vs Archi were 17-9, 17-12, and 15-11 respectively. The tie was broken by taking the net run rates of teams into consideration. The Faculty of Engineering with a NRR of 0.86 and the Faculty of Architecture with a NRR of 0.03 were promoted to the final match. The faculty of NDT had a NRR of -0.89.
The final match was held on 1st July with the support of many enthusiastic onlookers. Players of both teams exhibited brilliant talents in a neck-to-neck battle. At the end of a magnificent game, the team of Faculty of Architecture defeated the Faculty of Engineering as 18-6. Muditha Rajapakshe was crowned the Most Valuable Player while Mihiran Gevinda and Pasindu Bopearachchi were titled as the Best Pitcher and Best Batter respectively. Vishwa Dinath was elected as the Emerging Player.
Captain of the winning team, Pasindu Bopearachchi, stated that their win was empowered by the support and dedication of all team members. He expressed his gratitude for team members who worked hard to do their absolute best despite many inconveniences. Upon being asked what lead to their defeat, Rushan Jayathunga, the captain of the Team of Faculty of Engineering, stated that while both teams played well, his team made more mistakes than the opposing team. He also stated that identifying those weaknesses would help his members to perform better in their future endeavors.
The tournament was the final opportunity before SLUG 2019 for the Baseball Team of University of Moratuwa to compete against each other. Thus, it was a valuable opportunity for team members to identify the strengths and weaknesses they should focus on. However, many practice sessions and practice matches with fellow baseball teams of other universities have been scheduled for the coming months.
