Paris, July 29, 2024 — In an inspiring display of talent and determination, Sri Lankan swimmer
Ganga Senavirathne made waves and emerged as the top contender at the Paris 2024 Olympics, delivering an exceptional performance in the women’s 100m backstroke.
Competing at the Paris La Defense Arena at 14:43 SL time, Senavirathne, who qualified with a wild card and 688 FINA points, showcased her prowess and resilience in the pool. Clocking in at 1:04.26, she achieved a Rank No. 1 in Heat 1, marking a significant milestone in her career and for Sri Lankan swimming.
This attempt beat her season best of 1:04.93. While it did not quite match her personal best of 1:04.08, it demonstrates her commitment to excel in olympic waters.
Despite her remarkable effort, she placed 30th out of 36 competitors based on her timing in Heat 1, and will not advance to the semi-finals.
Although she will not compete further in this event, Senavirathne's achievements at the Olympics have already made her a national hero. Her dedication and hard work serve as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring athletes across Sri Lanka.
