Kelaniya thumps Ruhuna, Colombo cruise past Jpura

The quarter finals of the SLUG XIII 2019 edition went underway at the Koggala BOI grounds today. University of Kelaniya emerged as winners of the 1st quarter final against the hosts University of Ruhuna 27 points to 12 while the strong University of Colombo outfit beat University of Sri Jayawardenepura by a massive 41 points to 6.

Kelaniya vs Ruhuna (QF 1)

UoK were the first to get their name on the points board with an unconverted try and minutes later, the hosts University of Ruhuna scored a converted try and led the game 10 points to 7. Eventually the visitors Kelaniya replied with yet another unconverted try before half time to regain their lead.

Half time score - Kel 10 (2T) - Ruh 07 (1T 1C)

University of Kelaniya resumed scoring after the half time break and this time the try was converted successfully. The visitors were inching close towards victory with yet scintillating another try and the hosts were almost in shambles with the clock running down. Despite the hosts closing the gap by crossing over the try line, they succumbed to the visitors after they could not defend Kelaniya who scored yet another unsuccessfully converted try.

Colombo vs Sri Jayawardenepura (QF 2)

It was almost one way traffic in the second quarter finals with UoC scoring as many as 7 tries in an almost one sided game. It was absolute carnage when the boys from Colombo were hitting from left right and center to score 4 tries in the first half itself, leaving absolutely no scoring opportunity to their opponents. However only the third try was converted and the scores read 22 points to nil at lemons.

Half time score - Col 22 (4T 2C) -USJP 00

The team from Colombo made a very clear statement that they are hungry for the title as they resumed their natural patterns in attack. The Jpura team had no answer for the converted try and an unsuccessfully converted try that followed afterwards. However in the dying stages, University of Sri Jayawardhenepura kicked for 3 points when they were awarded a penalty. University of Colombo were not done yet as they reached the 40 point mark with the conversion after scoring the final try of the day. UJSP were playing for pride and closed the game with yet another penalty kicked for 3 points.

Full time score - Col 41 (7T 3C) -UJSP 06 (3P)
