MORA SECURES DOUBLE TITLES IN TAEKWONDO

The Taekwondo games of SLUG 2019 was held at the premises of University of Ruhuna on 28th and 29th of August. The defending champions, University of Moratuwa proudly won the overall championship in both Mens and Womens categories.

While University of Moratuwa won the overall Mens championship, University of Sri Jayewardenepura was placed runners Up and University of Kelaniya emerged as second runners up.

University of Colombo became the runners up from the women’s overall championship while the University of Ruhuna became the second runners up from the women’s category.

SLUG 2019 Taekwondo championships marked its beginning on 28th of August with Poomsae events. All the participants gave their best effort to bring glory to their university by demonstrating their skills and techniques. All the individual and team Poomsae events were very energetic and eye-catching and proved how talented university athletes can be.

In men’s category, Malith Anjana of University of Moratuwa won the gold medal in Poomse individual Junior event while Men’s senior individual Poomse event was won by W.P.C Nadeeshan of J’Pura. In women’s category Dhanusha Rajapaksha of UOM was able to clinch the gold medal in women’s individual Junior Poomse while R.D.M.P Jayaweera of Colombo was able to secure the victory in senior individual event.

In Poomsae team events, Kelaniya was able to come out on top in Men’s category and win the gold for Poomsae team event. Mora and J’Pura became runners-up and second runners-up respectively. Women’s Poomsae team event was triumphed by Colombo While Ruhuna became the runners up.Japura and Mora shared the second runners-up position.Thus the first day of the event concluded elevating MORA, Jpura, Colombo, and Kelaniya teams to a strong position.

Sparring events in SLUG Taekwondo championships were held on 29th of August and it was done under several weight classes. The whole session was mind-blowing and competitive to the extreme level. Throughout the whole day, the action continued and the intensity of the events and the surrounding environment made this session a must-see. At the end of the day, after witnessing some bold yet friendly competition, Sparring events concluded with these results.


Mens Catagory


  • A.R.Y kaushalya of univeristy of Sri Jayawardenepura won the 63-68kg Featherweight category(Men), while the univeristy of Moratuwa won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of peradeniya and univerisity of jaffna


  • G.K.H Peries of univeristy of Kelaniya won the 54kg Finweight category (Men), while the univeristy of moratuwa won second place and third place was shared by university of jaffna and univerisity of uva wellassa.


  • W.A.A. Dilshan of univeristy of Wayamba won the 54-58kg Finweight category (Men), while the univeristy of moratuwa won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of uva wellassa and univerisity of colombo.


  • M. Siran of univeristy of sabaragamuwa won the 58-63kg BENTOM (men), while the univeristy of moratuwa won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of peradeniya and univerisity of uwa welassa.


  • L.M.N Malinda of univeristy of ruhuna won the 87kg HEAVY (men), while the univeristy of colombo won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of jaffna and univerisity of kaleniya.


  • P.G.H.C Madhushnaika of univeristy of sabaharagamuwa won the 43-53kg BANTAM (women), while the univeristy of sri jayawardhanapura won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of moratuwa and univerisity of kaleniya.


Womens Catagory


  • G.R.N Kumari of univeristy of kaleniya won the 46kg FIN (women), while the univeristy of sabaragamuwa won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of peradeniya and univerisity of jaffna.


  • L.D.D.K Meegoda of univeristy of sabharagamuwa won the 46kg-49kg FLY (women), while the univeristy of ruhuna won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of moratuwa and univerisity of wayamba.


  • P.G.H.C Madhushnaika of univeristy of sabaharagamuwa won the 43-53kg BANTOM (women), while the univeristy of sri jayawardhanapura won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of moratuwa and univerisity of kaleniya.


  • K.R kaldasani  of univeristy of moratuwa won the 57kg-62kg LIGHT (women), while the univeristy of colombo won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of kaleniya and univerisity of jaffna.


  • S.L.A maneesha   of univeristy of colombo won the 62kg-67kg WELTER (women), while the univeristy of uva won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of ruhuna and univerisity of sri jayawardhanapura .


  • H.A.H.N de silva of univeristy of moratuwa won the 53kg-57kg FEATHER (women), while the univeristy of colombo won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of uva and univerisity of sri jayawardhnapura


  • M.G.H.C Dissanayake   of univeristy of moratuwa won the 67kg-72kg MIDDLE (women), while the univeristy of kaleniya won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of peradeniya and univerisity of sabharagamuwa.


  • M.A.S.M Perera of Univeristy of Kelaniya won the 72kg HEAVY (women), while the univeristy of Uva won the seocond place and third place was shared by university of ruhuna and univerisity of sri jaywardhanapura .


Thus after two action-packed days, SLUG Taekwondo championships came to a close. Team Mora was able to maintain their winning momentum throughout the whole tournament so as a result they were able grab the crown in both men’s and women’s division and become the undisputed champions of university Taekwondo arena once again.
