Mora Young Blood augur well for future Athletes and Chess masters

Freshers meet is one of the best platforms that allow the newbies to mingle with the University culture and identify the capabilities of young blood. Novices of 2019 intake, University of Moratuwa gathered around the university playground during the break of the day on the 18th of February 2020. It was the 7th consecutive day of the sports fiesta of Freshers Meet 2020. The day was planned to be held  two sports events including Athletics and Chess. The first event, Freshers track, and field events were commenced early in the morning. Youngsters were energetic to showcase their performances, initiating their steps on university sports life, a worthwhile life experience moving ahead. This was organized by the Physical Education Department of the University of Moratuwa while it was empowered by the Moraspirit. 

The agenda of the day was given the priority to field events. Athletes were determined to make a remark on track and field amidst cheers of an encouraging audience. Athlete T. D. S. S. Senarathne of Engineering Faculty was able to achieve the championship in men category at discus throw and shot-put events by marking respectively 23.99m and 8.65m. Meanwhile, W.A. K.N.S.Sulochana of Architecture Faculty was able to achieve championship in the same events in women category performing 15.50m and 5.92m. K. K. Pasan Nirmala Karunathilake Faculty of Architecture clocked 1minute and 12.38seconds at the 400m hurdles in men category. Pasan Karunathilake was highlighted as a newbie hurdler by winning the championship of 110m hurdles clocking 21.12seconds and championship in long jump event.

Field athletes who represented the Faculty of Architecture, A.W.T. Dilshan in men category and W.S.S.Wijerathne, women category marked 1.55m and 1.05m respectively at the high jump event. Janani Hewage, faculty of Architecture also marked a closed-run game on winning second place at the Freshers Meet 2020 in High jump event. The outstanding track event 100m running ended just a mark of time as 12.3seconds, leaving the Engineering Faculty as champions by Raveen Fernando. 

Apart from that Rukshan Athapaththu, Faculty of Engineering dominated the long-distance running events, grabbing championship of three-track events including 400m, 800m and 1500m. Thus, Rukshan Athapaththu was awarded as the best athlete in men category at the Freshers’ Meet 2020. Pavithra Baddewela of Engineering Faculty was awarded as the best women athlete of the Freshers’ Meet 2020 for her outstanding performance at a long jump event.

Meanwhile, the chess tournament at Freshers Meet 2020 was held in the afternoon at the Civil Studio at the University of Moratuwa. Since there was a large crowd gathered, the organizing team arranged 6 rounds in the male category and 5 rounds in the female category representing 4 faculties of the University of Moratuwa. Faculty of Engineering was managed to secure both overall men and women championship of Chess Tournament at Freshers’ Meet 2020. Faculty of Information Technology achieved the 1st Runners-up in women category while men 1st and 2nd Runners-up also conquered by the Engineering Faculty. According to the final rankings in male category Supun Dasantha, T.T. Wijerathne and H.M.A.K.Herath won the Championship, 1st Runners-up and 2nd Runners-up respectively. Sakuni Bandara, G.Theepana and D.P.H.K.Wickramasinghe achieved the Championship, 1st Runners-up and 2nd Runners-up respectively in women category.

So, the seventh consecutive day of Freshers’ Meet was concluded by highlighting exceptional individuals in the intake of 2019 batch. As MoraSpirit team we believe all of it was for augurs well of the future university sports arena.
