Sabaragamuwa conquers the Sri Lanka University Athletics championship 2019

14 new meet records were smashed at the Athletic meet of Sri Lanka university Games 2019 which was held on the 27th and 28th of July at the Sugathadasa International Stadium. University of Sabaragamuwa (SAB) dominated almost all the events thus ‘Sabare’ has been crowned with 7 overall championship.

The team of Sabaragamuwa university emerged as undisputed winners by scoring 248 points at the athletic meet of SLUG 2019. Out of the 14 new records ‘Sabare’ achieved 9 records. Sri Jayawardhanapura (SJP) became first-runners up by acquiring 146 points and University of Colombo emerged as second runners up with 100 points. Fourth and fifth places were achieved by University of Ruhuna and University of Jaffna respectively.

Girls of the Sabaragamuwa team smashed 4 records. One of the records was placed by Subhani Abeyrathne, who was a former sprinter. She clocked 1 minute and 06.21 seconds in the women’s 400m hurdles, breaking the meet record and finishing more than five second ahead of the second place sprinter. Omaya Udyangani clocked 25.26 seconds at the 200m event with more than two seconds to spare before second placed G.I. Srimali came in.  The long-distance runner S. Withusha at women’s 5000m emerged victorious with a new record of 20 minutes and 59.39 seconds. Meanwhile existing triple jump records were refurbished by B. M. H. P. Balasooriya from University of Sri Jayawardanapura recording 12.91m.

B.Lavanan from university of Peradeniya was able to initiate a new record of a 3.91m in men’s category of pole vault. K.A.P.Jayawardhana from SJP claimed the new discus throw record under his name with a performance of 39.36m.

This year’s World University Games participant Gihan Ranaweera whom represented University of Colombo recorded a performance of 22.6 seconds at the 200m under Men’s category while J. M. Insaaf (SJP) missed the chance by 0.16 seconds. R.M. Nifras of University of Colombo was able to place with a novel record of 1 minute and 54.26 seconds in 800m event and 4 minutes and 0.5 seconds in 1500m event. 

One of the outstanding players of Sri Lanka University Athletic Championship 2019,R.R.D Ranathunga was able to shatter both records in high jump and triple jump events in Men’s category recording 2.03m and 15.45m respectively. He also renewed the 100m hurdle record of M. Udaya Kumara (SJP) by 0.06 seconds initiating 14.64 seconds. As the captivators of SLUG 2019 athletic championship ‘Sabare’ remarked two new records of Men’s 100m relay during the heats.

The last event was 400m relays. The fans of Sabaragamuwa University team were wholeheartedly encouraging the team. Finally, the team SAB was able to overhaul the championship record with 3 minutes and 24.75 seconds while SJP was the runners up of the final event. It remarked the conclusion of Sri Lanka University Athletics championship 2019.

We hope to be the champions for the next time also. I am really happy about my team”
