SLUG 2019 - 13th Sri Lanka University Games Festival

Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) is a sporting event held with the participation of sportsmen and sportswomen of state universities in Sri Lanka. It can be considered as the most prestigious and the most awaited tournament of Sri Lankan university sports.

The first SLUG festival was held in 1980, in University of Peradeniya as a result of a suggestion made by the director of physical education of University of Peradeniya, Mr.Lesley Handunge. Since then, Sri Lankan universities have been continuously organizing this major event once in every 3 years. Today, among many sports fans, Sri Lanka University Games is known as the Sri Lankan Olympics because of the standards, tradition and enthusiasm it carries within. SLUG is indeed a great platform to expose the hidden talents of university students to the external world and a major contributor to the cause of promoting sports within Sri Lankan university community.

The most recent SLUG experience we had was in 2016, in which we got to witness the grandeur of the 12th SLUG tournament. SLUG 2016 was hosted by Wayamba University of Sri Lanka at Kuliyapitiya from 1st to 15th September. More than 5000 players from 14 universities participated in the 12th SLUG festival under 22 different sports categories. Overall Championship was grabbed by the University of Sri Jayawardenepura while first places of mens and womens divisions were clinched by University of Jayawardenepura and University of Colombo respectively.

After such a successful SLUG event in 2016, here we are in 2019, craving to witness and experience another new chapter of SLUG that is scheduled to be unfolded in this year. Under 22 sport categories, students now have the opportunity to show their talents on the greatest Sri Lankan university sports platform of all time. All preparations are being arranged to hold the SLUG for the 13th time, in this year in University of Ruhuna. However, due to the current security situation of the country, the dates are not fixed yet.

It is no secret that sports teams of every university were training and preparing for SLUG 2019 for a very long time. In fact, they all got a chance to test their preparation in last year’s inter-university games. After a tough battle for supremacy, University of Colombo was able to take the overall championship at inter-university games 2018. Colombo finished victorious with a total of 355 points as opposed to Jpura who got 339 points. The mens division was won by the University of Moratuwa who totaled 220 points while University of Colombo finished a close second on 203. The Colombo girls had things their own way beating Jpura by 152 to 143 in the womens division. Will these winners be able to keep their last year’s winning momentum? The SLUG festival is where the strength of the champions meets their spirit of victory. The event as a whole does not only bring out the skills of the players but also the greatness of sports itself.
