The 2024 Inter University Rowing Championship concluded on a high note, showcasing incredible talent, determination, and teamwork across multiple categories. Held at Colombo Rowing Club, the championship brought together the finest rowers from Sri Lankan universities.
The rowing competition was divided into multiple categories, based on the number of rowers and the type of boat. Common events included the 2-A, where two rowers each handle a single oar (a pair), and the IX categories, featuring larger boats with eight rowers and a coxswain steering the crew. The 4+ category involved teams of four rowers. Each category showcased different aspects of rowing, from the synchronization and stamina required in smaller boats to the power and coordination demanded in larger team events. To claim the championship, the four universities had to excel across all these categories.
The championship saw the participation of four universities, University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa, University of Ruhuna, and the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. Each university displayed remarkable skill and sportsmanship, making the competition highly competitive and engaging.
The University of Colombo and the University of Moratuwa led the pack throughout the event, producing intense races and spectacular finishes. The University of Colombo secured victories in the Women’s 2+B, Men’s IX-B, Men’s 2+A, Men’s 4+C, and Men’s 4+A categories. Their well-rounded performance and sheer grit on the water propelled them to the top of the championship leaderboard.
The University of Moratuwa also delivered stellar performances, capturing wins in the Women’s IX-A, Women’s IX-B, Women’s 2+A, Women’s 4+B, Women’s 4+A, Men’s IX-A, Men’s 2+B, and Men’s 4+B categories. The Moratuwa and Colombo rowers were relentless in their pursuit and challenged each other to do their best in every race, making it an exciting and competitive competition.
In the men's category, the University of Colombo exhibited an exceptional performance and clinched the championship title. In the women's category, the University of Moratuwa rowers emerged victorious, earning the title with an equally impressive display of strength and coordination.
The competition for the top spots was mainly between Colombo and Moratuwa. However, the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka also performed admirably, securing a well-earned third place overall. The University of Ruhuna, despite finishing fourth, displayed great determination and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
As the races concluded, the University of Colombo emerged as the overall champions of the 2024 Inter University Rowing Championship, with the University of Moratuwa finishing in a strong second place.
The 2024 championship highlighted the rowing prowess of these universities and demonstrated the growing popularity and development of rowing in Sri Lanka’s university sports scene. With Colombo and Moratuwa setting the standard, next year’s competition promises to be even more exciting.
