Hockey, another sport that is attracting the attention of many in this sports field, has now completed on August 28, at University of Peradeniya Amidst this event, eleven exceptionally skilled university teams showcased their prowess, delivering a display of extraordinary talent and determination throughout the championship.
The XIV SLUG 2023 Hockey Championships witnessed an exhilarating display of skill, determination, and sportsmanship as universities from the entire region clashed on the battleground of the field. The quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals of both the men's and women's categories showcased intense competition, surprising upsets, and extraordinary victories.
Women's Category: Quarter-finals and Semi-finals
The quarter-finals in the women's category saw the University of Sri Jayewardenepura clash with University of Kelaniya, where the Japura team secured an impressive 1-0 victory. Meanwhile, the University of Colombo went head-to-head with the Rajarata University, and the latter emerged victorious with an 8-0 scoreline. University of Ruhuna dominated their match against University of Peradeniya, clinching a 3-2 win, while Sabaragamuwa University outperformed University of Moratuwa with a commanding 0-2 victory.
Moving on to the semi-finals, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Sabaragamuwa University engaged in an intense battle that concluded with a close 3-2 victory to Japura team. In another gripping showdown, the University of Colombo triumphed over the University of Ruhuna with a decisive 2-1 score, showcasing their prowess and determination.
Men's Category: Quarter-finals and Semi-finals
The men's quarter-finals witnessed the Rajarata University overpowering Wayamba University with a clean sweep of 3-2. University of Kelaniya continued their winning streak by defeating University of Ruhuna with an identical 2-1 scoreline. University of Moratuwa secured a solid 1-0 victory against University of Sri Jayewardenepura, while University of Peradeniya emerged triumphant against University of Colombo with a 2-0 score.
