The 36th Sri Lanka Junior and Intermediate Nationals Championship was held at the Diyawannawa Rowing Centre on March 10th, 11th and 12th. University of Colombo bagged one Silver medal as a University team this time around.
Despite the fact that the athletes did not have sufficient training time unlike previous years due to the pandemic, rowers showed show much interest and participated in numbers for the regatta. The event was graced by several officials and the chief guest was Ms. Susanthika Jayasinghe.
The U-18 and Intermediate categories races were held according to international standards whereas, U-14 and U-16 junior category had their races on 500m and 1000m course respectively. This regatta was a remarkable one for the university sporting society as, Univeristy of Colombo Men’s team won the silver medal in the Men’s Intermediate Coxed four category.
While they won the silver medal, Army men’s won the gold. The University of Colombo team comprised of Ashen Perera, Melan Felix, Geshan Kulathilaka, Jonathan Cruze and Sanjana Wanigasekara. It is impressive how a novice team was able to race in a national regatta given the fact that they had trained for a short period of time.
Both men’s and women’s overall championship was won by Army’s men & Women's teams, whereas the Ananda College boy’s overall title and Ladies College Colombo won the girl’s overall tiles in the junior category.
