Sri Lankan badminton player Viren Nettasinghe faced his second match in the Men's Singles at the Paris 2024 Olympics today at 12.00pm at La Chapelle Arena, competing against Spanish player Pablo Abian.
Abian, 39 years old and currently ranked 63rd in the world, has an impressive record as the singles gold medallist at the 2018 and 2022 Mediterranean Games, and the 2015 European Games gold medallist in singles.
Viren had faced a significant challenge in the first round against Abian, who secured a strong lead with a score of 21-9. The gripping second-round match was tightly contested, with scores tied at 18 and 19. Despite his valiant effort, Viren ultimately lost to Abino in second round, who clinched victory with a final score of 21-19.
In his previous match,Viren faced Malaysian player Lee Zii Jia, where he showed commendable effort despite the tough competition.
Viren's participation in the Olympics marks a significant milestone for Sri Lankan badminton. His persistence and sportsmanship are evident as he competes against higher-ranked players. Although he is out of the competition, Viren’s performance remains commendable.
