Viren Nettasinghe is undoubtedly a talented badminton player who earned a spot to compete in the 2024 Olympics, making his motherland, Sri Lanka, proud. He was also marked as the youngest individual in the Olympic qualified list.
Today marked the start of the Paris Olympic badminton matches, and Sri Lankan player Viren Nettasinghe played his first match against the Malaysian player Lee Zii Jia under group G. Lee, who won the All England Open in 2021, has consistently been ranked among the top players in the world. His high skill level, competitive edge, and powerful smashes made him a tough opponent for Nettasinghe.
Despite a valiant effort and a magnificent performance from Nettasinghe, he unfortunately lost the match to Lee Zii Jia.
The players put on an incredible display of rallies and tactical plays in an exciting badminton encounter. The match ended with a huge gap in score of 21-14, 21-12. Lee won all of his matches, therefore the third match was called off with a final score of 2-0.
Despite Lee's world ranking of 7th and Viren's 70th in the Badminton World Federation, Viren demonstrated great effort and gave his best in the match.
