The Inter University Rugby Championship kicked off with a bang with the first match being a close encounter played between the University of Ruhuna and the Uva Wellassa University at the Colombo University Grounds. Both teams went neck and neck throughout the whole game with plenty of hard tackling from either side and in a game between such closely matched sides it was always likely to come down to the finest of margins. It was Ruhuna who took the lead with a first half try and they took that lead into the break with a 5-0 margin. However, afterwards the second half continued to be a close affair with both sides exchanging tries. Ruhuna were able to withstand some late pressure from UWU to finally run out as the winners by a slim margin of a single try.
The encounter between the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka took an entirely different complexion as the Sabra boys completely dominated proceedings at the University of Peradeniya Grounds. They were able to run in 5 tries in the first half (3 of them converted) in addition to a penalty kick to lead by 34 points to 0 at the break and the second half brought even more joy in the form of 6 further tries, adding up to a dominant scorecard of 70-0
The University of Colombo grounds kept up its habit of close games decided by a single try margin with the two protagonists being the University of Jaffna and the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka. Jaffna were able to score two tries in the first half in comparison to just one by their opponents, resulting in a 5 point lead at the break which they would maintain until the very end of the match, prevailing 15-10.
Another encounter at the University of Colombo Grounds, but this time not as close as the University of Sri Jayawardenapura ran in 13 tries against the University of Vavuniya. Despite, this being a disappointing loss the University of Vavuniya also made history with their first ever appearance at an Inter University Championships and will surely hope to improve with experience as the competition progresses.
The ruggerites from the Universities of Peradeniya and Wayamba showed that inclement weather was no match for them as they faced against each other at the University of Peradeniya grounds. Despite wet conditions underfoot due to persistent rain both teams were up for the challenge and it was a closely fought contest. It was the University of Peradeniya who prevailed on their home turf, running in 4 tries for a 22-0 win.
