Japura, Mora and Colombo advance in dual tennis success

"Only those who dare to fall greatly, achieve greatly".

This quote comes to mind as aspiring university teams took their place on the Colombo Gymkhana Club as they set on their quest for a place in the semifinals of the Inter University Tennis Championship.

Defending men's champions, the University of Colombo were grouped together with the Universities of Peradeniya, Kelaniya and the Eastern University of Sri Lanka. Keeping their streak of domination throughout, they swept the competition in their group, only dropping a match against Kelaniya as they romped to a comfortable top position in their group. The University of Peradeniya finished in second place, only losing to the University of Colombo as both teams qualified for the semifinals. In the other group it was a race to the top against the Universities of Sri Jayawardenapura and Moratuwa with Japura narrowly edging the competition. The University of Ruhuna finished in 3rd in the group. This set up the two semifinals as,

1. University of Colombo vs University of Moratuwa

2. University of Sri Jayawardenapura vs University of Peradeniya

The major surprise of the women’s competition was the defending champions, the University of Kelaniya falling to Moratuwa in their group stage encounter. Mora made a clean sweep of the competition as Kelaniya did enough to come in second and qualify for the semifinals. The other group was a similar affair as no other team was a match for the University of Sri Jayawardenapura as all comers were dispatched including the University of Colombo who came in as the runners up. Japura won all of their matches by the maximum possible margin of 3-0 as Colombo finished in the runners up position. The two semi-finals were set up as follows

1. University of Sri Jayawardenapura vs University of Kelaniya

2. University of Moratuwa vs University of Colombo

The semifinals and finals were be conducted tomorrow and we are sure to see a number of aces, breaks of serve, forehands and backhands as the tennis stars at the university stage are ready to bring their very best to the competition. As always, stay tuned with MoraSpirit for the latest updates from the tennis action and beyond.
